Vincente’s Rules for Software Development
(adapted from Gerry Dubois)
- Know your hardware
- A cloud is just someone else’s datacenter
- First you get good, then you get fancy
- Prototype, prototype, prototype
- Show me the code
- Saint Dogbert will slay the Demons of Stupidity
- Stay off the critical path
- Try to not be the reason other tasks are blocked
- Your tester is your friend
- It is better to find bugs in the lab than in the field
- You get paid by the time, not the line
- Enjoy working outside your box. “You are coin operated.”
- The company is not a charity
- When you help the company, the company helps you
- If your program cannot fit in 64K, then it has probably been written incorrectly
- In other words, modularize and optimize. Data is not included.
- The Apollo Guidance Computer had only 36K
